Jim Rakete

Jim Rakete, born on 1 January 1951 in Berlin, is a German photographer, photojournalist, filmmaker, author and producer. He is best known for his mostly black and white portraits. Rakete photographed numerous personalities from the German and international music and film scene as well as from politics. His pictures of Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles, Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Herbert Groenemeyer have become icons.

From 1977 to 1987 Rakete ran a photo agency in Berlin. During this time he not only photographed the covers of many musicians of the Neue Deutsche Welle, but also worked as a manager. Among the best-known artists and bands supported by Rakete are Nina Hagen, Nena, Spliff, Interzone, Sternhagel, Morgenrot and Die Ärzte.

After spending many years between Los Angeles and Hamburg, Rakete returned to Berlin in 2001, where he has lived and worked ever since. “NOW” is Rakete’s first feature documentary film. Director Jim Rakete asks some of the most prominent faces of the climate rebellion about their motives. He infects us with their tremendous energy and thirst for knowledge. They all have their goals clearly in mind. Because whatever must happen: it must happen NOW!
