The Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue Side Events are an ideal opportunity for gaining in‑depth knowledge about different aspects of the energy transition, as well as for exchanging views and experiences with key experts in the field. Wirtschaftliches Wachstum und Entwicklung in Afrika sollten daher möglichst klimafreundlich gestaltet werden. Die Bedingungen auf dem Kontinent für Erneuerbare Energien sind ideal. Für die deutsche Wirtschaft besteht als Vorreiter im Bereich der Erneuerbaren Energien großes Potenzial und ein verstärktes unternehmerisches Engagement deutscher Firmen kann dazu beitragen, die afrikanische Energieversorgung innovativ, nachhaltig und klimafreundlich zu gestalten.

There is the question of creating sustainable and socially acceptable and economic change without jeopardizing energy security, while also benefitting from new market growth and job potentials. At the same time, the energy systems need to be modernized to integrate potentially higher shares of fluctuating renewable energies. In this side event, representatives from yet coal-dependent countries will discuss the different possible options of reducing the role of coal in the energy systems against the background of the benefits and challenges associated with this transition.

Raffinerie Heide is a mobility and heating supply partner for northern Germany and a project partner of the WESTKÜSTE100: The creation of a regional hydrogen economy on an industrial scale, including a 30 megawatt electrolysis plant for the production of green hydrogen, transport it in the gas network, use it in industrial processes and to interlink different material cycles within the existing infrastructure. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy as the first hydrogen project within the framework of the “reallabs of the energy transition” program with 30 million euros.

INERATEC provides modular chemical plants for Power-to-X and Gas-to-Liquid applications and supplies sustainable fuels and products. Hydrogen from renewable electricity and greenhouse gases like CO2 are converted into e-kerosene, CO2-neutral gasoline, clean Diesel or synthetic waxes, methanol or SNG.

The innovative reactors provide a high load flexibility as well as quick start-up and shut-down times. Therefore, the reactors are perfectly suitable for fluctuating renewable energy applications, e.g. wind or solar. Additionally, with this reactor concept a cost-efficient, modular numbering-up approach instead of a risky technology scale-up becomes possible, meaning that standardized modules are multiplied to reach higher capacities instead of a traditional scale-up.

The strategies comprise elements of hydrogen production, local hydrogen economies and international trade of hydrogen. The “Verband beratender Ingenieure” is Germany’s leading association of independent planning and consulting engineers. It combines close to 2000 consulting companies of all sizes from small freelance workers to large multinational corporations with thousands of skilled experts. The members of the association solve problems of technical, economic and ecological problems through excellence and experience.
In this workshop members of the German Association of Consulting Engineers will present their work in renewable energy production with a special focus on hydrogen creation, transportation and storage. The presenters include some of Germany’s biggest engineering companies in the field of planning and execution of energy infrastructure with an extensive resume in large international projects. Each company will give a 15-minute presentation to highlight and explain key projects. The total length for the workshop is projected to be 90 minutes.

Both Germany and France have developed a national hydrogen strategy in the past year, in which 9 and 7 billion € respectively are to be invested. Both countries focus on the use of hydrogen in the industrial and heavy-duty sectors. In addition, more is to be invested in research and innovation.

The German hydrogen strategy states that only so-called "green hydrogen", i.e. hydrogen produced on the basis of renewable energies, is sustainable in the long term. Therefore, Germany wants to actively support its market ramp-up. The goal is to have generation plants with a total capacity of up to 5 GW by 2030 in order to be able to cover part of the hydrogen demand itself. The majority of hydrogen demand, on the other hand, is to be imported.

The French hydrogen strategy speaks of "decarbonised hydrogen". The goal is to install electrolysers with a total capacity of 6.5 GW by 2030. The development of hydrogen technology is also expected to create up to 150,000 jobs, either directly or indirectly.

The national hydrogen strategies will be presented in more detail at the online conference. Registration is free of charge for DFBEW members, press and public authorities and 140 EUR for non-members and third parties.

Many countries and companies worldwide have committed to net zero targets / climate neutrality by the middle of this century or soon after. With their declining costs, wind and solar power will play a fundamental role in driving this transformation towards net-zero emissions in the energy systems worldwide. The current trend towards electrifying transport, heating, and industry also represents a unique opportunity for a clean energy transition across sectors. Along with key options such as powerfuels (green hydrogen), this trend helps integrate ever greater shares of variable renewables and accelerate the decarbonisation of the wider energy system.
This think-tank roundtable will provide insights on climate-neutral strategies, pathways, and actions, including the possible role of green hydrogen from the point-of view of a network of leading energy transition think-tanks. Experts from Japan, South Korea, Germany, South Africa and Indonesia will present national roadmaps to decarbonize the energy sector, discuss the role of electrification and hydrogen towards a climate neutral future, as well as address the economic benefits and challenges of the transition in the context of the post-COVID recovery.

It is time to shift towards the solution providers that embrace the fourth industrial revolution and deliver what is needed in society in resource efficient ways.

This session will present the work in Mission Innovation to identify and quantify 1.5C compatible innovations and different stakeholders at the forefront of the fastest industrial transformation humanity have ever experienced. This change will happen regardless as we live in the 4th industrial revolutions, but due to the climate crisis we must accelerate the transition and guide it towards sustainability.

ALDI SÜD hat in Deutschland 1940 Filialen und beschäftigt rund 47.500 Mitarbeiter. Der Discounter übernimmt Verantwortung für seine Kunden und Mitarbeiter, für Natur, Umwelt und Gesellschaft. Seit 2017 handelt ALDI SÜD klimaneutral, als erster Lebensmitteleinzelhändler in Deutschland. Mehr als 1300 ALDI SÜD Filialen haben eine eigene Fotovoltaikanlage auf dem Dach. Der dort produzierte Strom fließt u.a. in die Kühlung und Beleuchtung - und an immer mehr Filialen auch in eine Elektrotankstelle: An 250 Filialen können Kunden ihr Elektroauto aufladen.

Stadtwerke Emden GmbH (Emden City Utilities) or SWE is a German communal company, owned by the city of Emden, which offers public services for the city and the region of Emden. The company supplies electricity for Emden‘s 25.000 households as well as natural gas, drinking water and, through its stake in the Emden Digital GmbH, telecommunications services. SWE operates local energy grids and has been continuously expanding generation from renewable energy, especially in onshore wind. SWE also owns the Flugplatz Emden GmbH, which owns and runs an airfield to provide aviation services for the offshore industry.

Driven by favourable policy frameworks and technology advancements, variable renewables are increasingly gaining ground in power generation. According to the IEA Sustainable Development Scenario, electricity is expected to increase in its share of total final energy demand from 18% in 2018 to above 30% by 2030. Renewables are expected to make up for the largest share, with 52% of global electricity generation, notably solar PV and wind at 29%. In order to realise these projections that set the world to reach net-zero by 2070, power system flexibility will become a cornerstone of electricity security.

Moreover, reaching net-zero, according to the WEO 2020 special net-zero by 50 scenario, will require even greater shares of VRE deployment and thus flexibility.
Over the last three years, the Power System Flexibility Campaign (PSF) has engaged substantially in topics of power plant flexibility, market design, digitalisation and sector coupling. During this time, focus has been placed on solutions for short to very short-term flexibility, where the usefulness of various resources such as, flexible VRE, grids, battery storage and demand-flexibility, and policy options to activate them can be more easily conveyed to key decision makers in policy and industry.
As more countries implement long-term net-zero goals, reliant on high shares of renewables, it becomes evident that the need to address flexibility requirements in the weeks to season or annual horizons will become increasingly important. At higher shares of renewables, the production of synthetic fuels, such as hydrogen or green gas, is coming to the fore as a cost-competitive option to use surplus VRE output and serve the longer-term flexibility needs of the power system or other integrated sectors of energy demand. However, there remains a gap between the conceptual understanding of the importance of sector coupling and actual solutions that, in the foreseeable future, may contribute to power system flexibility.

There is a growing importance of CSP/PV hybrid systems with thermal storage as confirmed by Worldbank and IRENA in recent studies. These systems can provide flexible, renewable energy, 24/7 in regions with excellent direct solar resources for electricity and hydrogen generation. They lower the cost of rapidly expanding renewable energy, allowing to replace a larger share of fossil fuels in the energy mix.
Solar heat for industrial process systems is becoming a growing reality even in regions with less direct solar radiation. In combination with thermal storage, it can cover the heat supply in the industrial sector 24/7 and can play a key role in industrial decarbonisation.

The workshop will give an insight in technologies and applications of solar systems in combination with thermal storage as well as their economics.

As one of the largest energy consumers worldwide, the transport sector accounts for about one quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, to achieve the global climate targets, a systemic change of the mobility sector must be the next step in the global energy transition and a key concern of green recovery efforts. The high-level symposium Transforming Mobility by Mid-Century discusses the investment decisions that must be taken today to achieve decarbonization of our transport systems by 2050. Uniting mobility experts and policy makers from different countries, this panel discussion reflects on how we can enable this process by introducing new technologies and mobility models, increasing transport efficiency and incentivizing changes in mobility behavior as well as the role of e-mobility and hydrogen cells for future transport scenarios.

One of the most spectacular concepts for supplying businesses, private households and local government with renewable energies on a decentralised, self-sufficient basis is currently being implemented in Feldheim, a district of Treuenbrietzen, a town in Brandenburg. The project owes its success to the excellent partnership between the municipality of Treuenbrietzen, the residents of Feldheim and the project developer, Energiequelle GmbH. The individual households in Feldheim, Treuenbrietzen, are supplied with heat and power from renewable energy power plants on their own doorstep via autarchic local grids. The nearby wind farm is the backbone of the local power supply grid, whereas heat is supplied by the local biogas plant. A sophisticated heating plant fired with woodchips is available for additional thermal energy requirements on particularly cold days.

Every year, the World Energy Council surveys energy policymakers, CEOs and leading experts around the world to find out which energy issues they consider to be most relevant. The responses are summarised in the Issues Monitor. It provides unique insight into what energy experts identify as Critical Uncertainties and Action Priorities. Over 2,500 energy leaders from more than 108 countries took part in the survey. Martin Young, Senior Director, Insights at the World Energy Council, will present the results of this year's Issues Monitor edition. Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz Transmission, will give a commentary on the results from a German perspective.

Despite a strong renewable energy potential, the region remains heavily dependent on fossil resources.

During this moderated roundtable experts from the region, including Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, will present and discuss key challenges and barriers currently hampering energy transitions in Southeast Asia. They will also share ideas for how to shape them more sustainable.

The 1.5-hour online event will be held in English and includes a Q&A session.

This initiative is organized by “CASE” (Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia), a programme funded by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), aligned to the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP).
